As many as one in four women will experience hair loss at some time in their lives. Women’s hair loss is difficult to pinpoint until it is in a progressive or severe stage.

Hair loss in women begins in most cases in the 40s or 50s at the onset of menopause, though it can occur as early as the 20s, and being seen in increasing numbers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology hair loss in women is a growing problem, affecting more than 30 million women in the United States alone.

"Society accepts a bald man," says Marvin Friedman, NuHair President, "It’s not a socially acceptable for a woman to be bald in public. Female pattern baldness is just as common in women as it is in men, though the timing and pattern is different."

Hair does not grow back to its previous stage of full thick hair. It does progress to various degrees of baldness. Women are better at disguising their hair loss than men, and in women it is generally less extensive in terms of severity. Women with hair loss who develop female-pattern baldness, the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp, rather than concentrated in one or two spots. Hairs become progressively finer and shorter. Bald spots appear here or there, some with short hair that are broken off. Total baldness is very rare in women with female pattern hair loss. Female-pattern baldness starts with the replacement hairs becoming progressively finer and shorter. They can also become almost transparent.

Women during their life time may encounter forms of losing hair condition in a variable period of time. In most cases and second to female pattern hair loss, it is Telogen Effluvium condition due to pregnancy or child birth. It is a hormonal factor, an estrogen level is lower, and in other words it is an estrogen deficiency period that causes hair thinning. Telogen Effluvium can occur due to crash diets, use of harsh chemicals, due to an emotional trauma or due to medical health issue such as lupus, ovary cystic, abnormal thyroid, anemia or hormonal imbalances. It can also be due to side effect of medication such as antidepressants, hypertension drugs, chemotherapy and others. It is a temporary hair loss in which a higher than normal percentage of hair go into a shedding phase. However, in most cases the hair grows back. When female pattern baldness occurs, only after time elapses and large thin areas or baldness is noticed, women realize that this time it is different. When excessive hair loss is present, a health care professional diagnosis is advised to pinpoint the underlying medical problem, not just the resulted condition.

Female pattern baldness is most likely affected by male hormones called testosterone, which cause a shut-down of the follicles in response to DHT, a byproduct of testosterone. "Over time, an excess build-up [of DHT] in the follicle causes it to begin shrinking, which in turn alters the natural resting and growth phases of the hair," says Reed, clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center. This is the same condition as in male pattern baldness, androgenic alopecia. Scientists at Bonn University recently found that women who pass a gene conferring high testosterone to their sons also make them more prone to premature baldness.

Many doctors immediately begin treating the patients with hair growth medications such as Rogaine. However, diagnosing the underlying medical problem with series of tests will benefit the patient in the long run. Although research is still in the early stages of assessing the causes of women’s hair loss improvements in treating underlying illness or abnormality in ones health is greatly improved in the past few years. A woman who experiences hair loss will benefit by consulting initially with her doctor for medical advice about her overall individual health condition and not just the hair loss condition outcome.

We all know that hair is our crowning glory. But what if our hair is getting loss? We are all curious why this happens.

Let’s find out what is the reason why this is happening. Let us analyze first what are the causes of hair loss. Hair growth has a normal cycle that last for two to six years. Ninety percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any time. Per month, the hair grows about one centimeter. At any time, the growth is in a resting phase of about ten percent of the hair on your scalp. The undeveloped hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place after two to three months. As a part of this cycle, it’s normal to fall some hair.

During teenage years hair loss can come to a person just by not eating right or maybe you are sick. There are some medical treatments and medications, like chemotherapy treatment for cancer that can cause hair loss. Hair loss can occur if they wear a hairstyle that pulls on the hair like braids. During teen years hair loss is just temporary. The hair usually grows back after the problem that causes it is corrected.

Sometime hair treatment that have chemicals may cause of hair loss like getting your hair colored, straightened, premed, bleach, or highlights that damage your hair and make it brittle, if the hair is brittle its easy to fall and break but this is just temporary. Another type of hair loss that results from hair treatment actually can be lasting. Traction alopecia is hair problem which is cause from tiring hair pulled so forcefully, because its places tension to the scalp.

Poor eating and poor nutrition can give hair loss. The body isn’t getting enough vitamins, protein, and minerals to maintain hair growth. If teens are vegetarian also loss their hair if they don’t get enough protein from non meat sources. Also athlete can have hair loss, they more likely to develop anemia. The hair’s growth cycle temporarily can alter in some major event. This major event can momentarily cause flaking of large amounts of hair such as having surgery, delivering a baby, or going to traumatic event. This type of hair loss corrects itself. Because the hair we see on our heads has actually taken months to grow, a person might not notice any disturbance of the hair growth cycle until months after the event that caused it. One thing more therapeutic conditions may also cause of hair loss.

In taking care of your hair, eating healthy and balance diet is important, it really benefits your hair. One more thing, you can treat and prevent hair loss by taking herbal remedy. There are masses of herbal remedies out there, just make sure to pick the right one. You can do a little research about the herbal remedy before you purchase it.

You didn’t choose to lose your hair, but you can certainly choose how you will react to your new situation. Hair loss can affect people of any age, even as young as twenty. It can be caused by genetics, illness, or chemical abuse. Believe it or not, hair loss in women is also very common. Regardless of the reason you lost your hair, it’s time to find the right hair loss treatment.

The number of hair loss treatments available makes them easy to find but difficult to choose. Look at your own health and diet before you start looking for a hair growth product. Your hair follicles are living organisms just like the cells throughout the rest of your body. They need vitamins and nutrients to survive. Even the best hair growth treatment on the market may have minimal impact if you are not enjoying a healthy diet.

Damaged hair follicles are very common and may be one of the leading contributors to hair loss. It’s easier to damage your hair follicles than you thing. Harsh chemical shampoos, over-exposure to the sun, harsh blow-drying and brushing, and even hat wearing may damage the follicles contained within the scalp. These factors contribute to female hair loss as well as to hair loss in men.

The health of your hair follicles, found within the scalp, is essential to healthy and fast hair growth. There is not a hair growth treatment on earth that will help you re-grow your hair if you are not taking care of your scalp. Be sure to avoid over-exposure to UV rays, heat from excessive blow drying, and chemicals contained in regular hair care products. Avoiding these things will enable your hair follicles to remain functional and grow healthy hair.

Hair growth shampoo and hair growth vitamins are both popular treatment methods for hair loss in women and men. There are hundreds of products to choose from and you may need to consult a professional in order to determine which are best for your unique situation. Some treatment methods may take more time than others and require regular visits to the office or salon. Others can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Natural hair growth products are available for those who would prefer to attempt to treat their conditions without the use of chemicals. Your doctor may choose to combine oral and topical treatments in order to achieve maximum effect. Laser hair growth treatments provide yet another option, but can vary in intensity and cost.

You should not start any hair growth treatment before consulting with a medical practitioner. Some hair growth products have the potential to cause side effects which may be very serious.

Regardless of which you choose, hair loss treatments harbor the potential to give you the results you desire without the expense of hair transplant or plugging techniques. Fast hair growth may not be optimal, but the proper combination of treatments will have the best effect and leave you feeling better about your hair in no time!

Understanding the causes of hair loss and slowed hair growth is your first line of defense in preventing or treating the condition. While it is a well known fact that there are some diseases that cause hair loss, most do not realize that there are a number of other hair loss triggers.

What are the triggers, you ask? Some medications cause hair loss, whether they are used short term or over a longer period of time. The abuse of illegal substances can lead to hair loss as well.. Can stress cause hair loss? Absolutely! Even your physical environment, such as chemicals in your work environment or in your hair care products, can be major contributors. Hats cause hair loss as well, most often in people who wear them on a regular basis.

Genetics also play a major role in determining whether or not you will experience hair loss later in life. While patterns of baldness may be evident in both your maternal and paternal bloodlines, the maternal bloodline is the one you must keep a close eye on. Taking a close look at your family history will not help you to determine when you will experience hair loss, but it will allow you to determine the best course of preventative action.

The chemicals found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, hairsprays, and dyes are incredibly harsh and will lead to dry, brittle, and unhealthy hair. Excessive use of these products may lead to irreparable hair damage and eventually to baldness and slowed hair growth. There are dozens of gentle and natural hair care alternatives available to replace your current products.

Even if genetics indicate you will lose your hair, you will not know whether or not you will experience symptoms at the same age or at the same rate. Everyone’s hair growth patterns are different. Thankfully, there are preventative measures you can take to prevent hair loss, including hair care products, medications, and even massage therapy.

Can stress cause hair loss? Medical studies have proven stress to be a contributing cause of hair loss in women and men alike. Individuals who live and work in high stress environments are more likely to suffer from hair loss than others.

Those with physical illnesses that contribute towards hair loss are at a disadvantage. Not only might their illness cause hair loss, but the stress associated with their illnesses might make the hair loss even worse. Seek treatment for stress, whether it is emotional or triggered by other causes. Doing so will enable you to control your hair loss.

Any of the above noted conditions will be made worse if you already have a family history of baldness. Use care in choosing hair care products that are gentle and be sure to use them only when necessary. Find a hair care product specially formulated for preventing or slowing the rate of hair loss. Doing so will enable you to fight hair loss.

Many women have heard of postpartum depression, but not as many are familiar with the condition known as postpartum hair loss. Hair loss after pregnancy is a very common condition amongst women. Many women begin to notice postpartum hair loss while shampooing their hair in the shower, when it seems as large amounts of hair are falling out.

Pregnancy, while a wonderful experience, has a physically traumatic impact on a woman’s body and can become a major cause of female hair loss. A woman’s hormones fluctuate drastically before, during, and after birth. Hormonal changes in the cells in the blood stream have a direct impact on the function of hair follicles, thus leading to postpartum hair loss.

Thankfully, female hair loss associated with postpartum hormonal changes generally only lasts a few months. Most women do not need to seek treatment for this condition as the hair will grow back after the hormone levels in the body rebalance.

Women who have thin hair before pregnancy may be especially concerned about postpartum hair loss and might want to take preventative action to avoid the condition. The use of gentle brushing techniques accompanied by very gentle hair care products are some of the best ways to avoid excess hair loss.

Pregnant women and those who have just given birth should be especially careful to avoid the chemicals involved in hair dying or perming. Hair loss after pregnancy is guaranteed to become worse if the hair is exposed to these damaging ingredients.

Notably, there is not very much research detailing whether or not the chemicals in hair care products are damaging to babies. Yet another reason to stay away from these products altogether. It is recommended that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding stay away from salons altogether as breathing in the chemicals from dyes may be just as harmful as topical absorption.

Female hair loss may be caused by genetics or illness, so it is important to know if you are predisposed to hair loss before pregnancy. Unfortunately, hair loss caused by postpartum hormonal changes may only be the start of your hair loss experience. Knowing more about your odds of hair loss will leave you better equiped to deal with your unique situation.

Check with your hair care professional if you have any questions regarding your postpartum hair loss. He or she is familiar with the condition and will be able to provide additional information for dealing with your condition.

Procedure of Eyebrows Transplant:

The procedure for transplant eyebrow has more than a hundred hairs involve, generally taken from your own hair, and the task of perfecting your eyebrows. The physicians have to note carefully the angle and direction of your natural hair, hair coveted spot. The procedure is normally painless, but if you are particularly sensitive to pain, a mild oral sedative.

Two to four days, in accordance with the procedure tiny crusts are formed around each transplanted hair. There is no reason to worry about these crusts are similar to what you see on a crust, and as a crust, they are not without pain. In addition, these crusts leave scars not get left behind. You can see some experiments "rose", but this should fade at the end of the first week. The transplanted hair fall themselves after about two weeks, and then again a growth of around three months, to continue to grow and for life.

Disadvantages of Eyebrows Transplant:

The disadvantages are very less, but you should keep in mind that a one to two inch incision has to be made, and this incision heals and any scarring is concealed by the actual hair re-growth. The only other problem is that some times few wayward hairs grow in the wrong direction. This can easily be corrected by either plucking or using a brow gel to reshape the hair’s direction.

Eyebrows and Hair Color:

Light blonde hair: Use a blonde or brown pencil.

Naturally brown hair: Use a reddish brown brow pencil.

Naturally black hair: Use a pencil that has a slight gray cast to it. The gray tone mimics the sheen of naturally glossy hair, and thereby lends a much more natural appearance.

This is referred to as an autoimmune condition; it means that the body itself is responsible for the condition the individual in suffering from. In this case, the person’s autoimmune system is attacking the hair follicles, causing usually one but possibly two or three patches of hair loss. Fortunately, these patches will experience hair re-growth in 3 to 6 months even without treatment. However in some cases the regrown hair can be white.

Alocepia areata can become alopecia totalis, and in which case, the condition will cause the individual to suffer from complete baldness. Alocepia areata can also affect other hair follicles in your face and body.

Fungal Infections

Yes, hair loss can also be caused by fungal infection. School-age children are the ones who mostly suffer from this condition. When the scalp area is hit by a fungal infection. Oral antibiotics are, however, available for treating the infection and the hair will almost always grow back.

Male Pattern Baldness

Also known as androgenetic alopecia, this condition is caused by a mixture of genetics and hormones. It affects both men and women because male hormones are present in both male and female bodies.

Telogen Effluvium

This condition is actually not at all bad but simply a natural part of life. Hair on your scalp has an average lifespan of three years. When it reaches the last stage of its cycle, the telogen phase, it seeks to rest and falls out. Approximately 100 hair strands each day reach the telogen phase. When you use shampoo on your hair, the substance loosens up your hair strands, enough for them to fall out sooner than expected. But this is nothing to worry about because these hair strands were also nearing the telogen stage and the shampoo only expedited the entire process. All these hair strands will be replaced by the body.

It is estimated that 10% of our hair is always approaching the telogen phase. This can go as far as forty percent when we have just undergone surgery, childbirth, sudden weight loss, and high fever. But again, this is nothing to worry about because our body immediately seeks to replace any hair strands we’ve lost.

Traction Alopecia

Certain hairstyles exert too much pressure on your hair roots, causing you to lose much more hair than is usual or necessary. This condition is called traction alopecia. You can avoid it simply by ensuring that you don’t tie or bind your hair too tightly and to the extent of causing hair loss.

Trichotillomania

Some people have a habit of pulling their hair, even unconsciously so, while they’re thinking deeply or feeling stressed. In extreme cases, this can cause baldness. Trichotillomania results in broken-off hair strands rather than patches of baldness. It could lead to baldness given enough time of course. The only way to cure this condition is by becoming aware of your problem and resolve to avoid indulging in it.

Although androgenetic alopecia is more commonly known as male-patterned baldness, it is also a condition affecting women due to the presence of male hormones in the female body. For women, it is known both as female alopecia or female-patterned baldness.

What Is Female Alopecia?

The pattern of baldness for women is different from men. Rather than making itself known with patches or spots of hair loss, it starts out with the thinning of hair throughout the entire scalp but almost always without causing the hairline to recede. Even better, female alopecia rarely results in complete baldness.

Important Figures for Female Alopecia

As many as thirteen percent of women suffering from premenopausal syndromes are experiencing androgenetic alopecia. The numbers only go up as women get older and reach menopausal and postmenopausal stages. Nevertheless, female alopecia can show up as early as women reaching thirty years of age.

How Does Female Alopecia Start Out and Progress?

Female alopecia may not be a life-threatening illness but even so, it can be a serious cause of dismay as many perceive hair loss as a detractor to their physical appeal. Thankfully, female alopecia takes place gradually. It begins with hair thinning, made more evident with an increased degree of hair shedding.

Procedures for Female Alopecia

Rarely is a biopsy needed to determine if a woman is actually suffering from female alopecia. But if a biopsy is indeed performed, this can also be used to determine whether female-patterned baldness is occurring. It is usually better if two types of hair samples are taken: one from vertical sectioning and another from horizontal sectioning.

Possible Treatments for Female Alopecia

Not all treatments for male alopecia will work well with female alopecia especially if the woman isn’t in perfect health. It is best to consult with your doctor prior to taking any kind of medication or treatment for your condition. As medications and treatments are usually taken in a continuous basis, money might also one of the important factors you should consider when choosing the optimal solution.

Minoxil

Minoxil wasn’t originally intended to be a medication for baldness, male or female, but rather, it was a medication for high blood pressure. When subsequent studies showed hair growth as one of the side effects of Minoxil, this led to the idea of turning it into a medication for baldness. Later on, Minoxil was officially used for creating a topical solution for baldness and it became one of the two officially accepted treatments for baldness by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Continuous application is necessary since abrupt withdrawal or discontinuation can lead to a sudden reverse effect of all the positive results of the treatment. There are two kinds of this treatment currently available in the market: one that contains 2% Minoxil and another containing 5% Minoxil. The latter is said to be somewhat more effective. The best news about Minoxil is how studies show women responding more positively to the treatment compared to men.

Finasteride

Unlike Minoxil, it is not entirely safe for Finasteride to be prescribed for treating female alopecia. One of the various side effects of taking Finasteride is causing your unborn child to suffer from severe birth defects. Finasteride is thus a danger for women who are already or might become pregnant.

Surgery

Lastly and the most expensive option of all would be surgery. Women can opt for micrografting - a process that transplants hair from other areas of the scalp to those areas suffering from female alopecia.

It appears that, like wrinkles and belly fat, baldness is largely inherited. However, the theory that baldness is inherited from the mother’s side may have been debunked.

Newer studies have concluded that male pattern baldness may come from either parent; though the mother’s side may be slightly more influential. What this means to the average male is this: look to your family.

Pay particular attention to your father, grandfathers and uncles. If the grass is thick everywhere, breathe a fairly confident sigh of relief. If there are more shiny skulls than not, you may be at risk for baldness.

The good news is that hair follicles do not die. Instead, they simply become unproductive. The trick to preventing hair loss is figuring out how to keep those hair follicles from becoming dormant. It may even be possible to re-awaken unproductive hair follicles and re-grow hair.

If family history suggests that hair loss is a likely scenario for you, there are some things that decrease your risk.

Using natural products to help prevent baldness is cheaper than trying to replace lost hair once it’s already gone. Consider the power of these natural ingredients to stave off thinning hair:

* Saw Palmetto: This herb is sometimes used to treat enlargement of the prostate. This is because Saw Palmetto blocks the production of DHT (a metabolite of testosterone), a contributing factor to enlarging of the prostate. Because DHT production also causes hair loss, Saw Palmetto has been shown to be effective for preventing hair loss in some men.

* Nettle root: Those little plants with the big sting are good for something after all. Nettle root is another treatment which blocks the production of chemicals which enlarge the prostrate.

They are the same ones that can cause hair loss. Evidence suggests that nettle root may not only stave off baldness, but may actually regenerate hair growth.

* Vitamins: Your mother told you they were good for you, but you may not know they’re good for your hair too. Vitamin A is an anti-oxidant which promotes healthy production of sebum in the scalp.

Vitamin E stimulates circulation. Good blood circulation in the scalp is important in keeping hair follicles productive. The ‘B’ vitamins contribute to melanin, which gives hair its healthy color and also stimulates blood circulation.

In addition to these ingredients, which help stop hair loss naturally, massage is also beneficial. Massage stimulates circulation. As already noted, good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Experts suggest a few minutes of daily head massage by hand. Circulation through massage may be improved by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base with massage.

Don’t panic when your next family reunion nets a sea of bald heads. There’s hope for you. Since all of these natural remedies also have other health benefits on the body besides stimulating the scalp, there’s little reason not to try them.
