How I Finally Got Over Obstructive Sleep Apnea

I was a very loud snorer. I’m only 20 years old, but I already had to deal with an embarrassing problem: I snored so loud that it kept my girlfriend and friends awake at night, causing them to be irritable with me. It became such a problem that I became reluctant to visit friends and relatives for overnight visits, and I became afraid to fall asleep during plane rides out of fear of embarrassing myself.

My girlfriend finally convinced me that I might have a problem that she had read about in a medical journal called OPA, or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I found out that OSA is a sleep and breathing disorder that blocks the airway and stops breathing while sleeping. My airway could be blocked, so my body could be deprived of oxygen repeatedly during sleep. After visiting the doctor, I found that I did have OSA. I was stunned. How could I have OSA? I was only 20 years old! After some moping, I decided to take action and do some research. Internet Paralysis Costing Us “Me” Time

In a time not so long ago in my memory, hard working adults re-centered by experiencing “me” time to decompress from demanding jobs and get more in tune with themselves. There were no cell phones, beepers, or Internet. People indulged in good books, had ample stress free vacations, took self-improvement classes, meditated, and volunteered in their communities.

Fast forward to today. Well-we still read books (e-books), go on vacations (long weekends), and volunteer (hopefully not per a court order), but not as much and it’s much more hurried. We’re now part of a faster paced society that’s gotta have more, more, more. We’ve become alarmingly overstressed, depressed, and obese because of the lack of quality “me” time for health and wellness

One thing I blame is the Internet. If Al Gore actually did invent it, he forgot to include an automatic shut off devise so we could take some “me” time. In a term I dub as “Internet Paralysis”, we’re constantly glued to our screens for work, family, associates, friends, research, and more.

You see it in the corporate world, executives and employees with blackberries and other PDA devices in that constant state of the slight head tilt sending emails for their job. It may even be after 6p, but the work stays with them long into the evening cutting down on “me” time. Or, once they get home from the office, it’s fire up the computer and login to the office email account and get some more work done.

You see it with your network of friends, family, and associates. Long threads of email conversations and responses that take so long to answer and respond to that before you know it, you’ve been “internet paralyzed” right through your “me” time. The time you should have taken to improve your health and wellness.

You see it when you want to plan a vacation. You insist on getting the best deal and researching online travel sites to book your itinerary. Instead of calling a travel agent, you’ve worked your way through any “me” time you would have had researching. Now you’re overstressed and really need a vacation. But, when you finally go on vacation, you find yourself going into withdrawals to check your emails…the thing that you were supposed to be getting away from. You just can’t help not knowing what’s going on out there in your job and network of friends and associates. So, you go to the hotel lobby to the room with the computer and internet instead of being on the beach meditating and getting more in tune with your spiritual self.

You see it with pop culture. Because of your computer, you know more about your favorite rock star, movie star, or celebrity through fan websites, blogs and chat forums than maybe they know about themselves. Do we really need to know what nightclub they were walking out of at 4a last Saturday night? This is taken in pills but there are cases wherein a patient must take in intravenous doses. This is taken one hour before a full meal and is swallowed whole in order to achieve the best results to get rid of your acid reflux. Just like Prilosec, Nexium has not yet been tested on pregnant and nursing women.

3. Prevacid (Lansoprazole). Another medication to get rid of your acid reflux and this is another PPI which retards acid production by letting the damaged tissues inside the esophagus heal properly. These can be swallowed as tablet forms by placing these under the tongue and dissolving it, as opposed to swallowing it whole. Intravenous doses are available for patients who cannot handle tablets. This is also the remedy recommended to women who are pregnant and nursing.

4. Protonix (Pantoprazole). Pronix is also a proton pump inhibitor you can take to get rid of your acid reflux. It may not be as well known as the others but it also works the same way. It comes in pill form and it is a known treatment for GERD. It is more effective in treating ulcers though. This is taken in pill form 30 minutes before a meal but it entails two months to confirm whether this is effective to get rid of your acid reflux. This cannot be recommended for pregnant and nursing women.

5. Tagamet (Cimetidine). This is believed to be an over-the-counter drug to get rid of your acid reflux but a prescription is required before anyone can have access to this. This is the medication for those who have incessant heartburn problems. This stops acid production but it is quite different from the other PPI drugs. It blocks histamines which stimulate acid production. In a number of cases, this prescription is needed when there are damages on the tissues. This is taken in pill form and has not yet been tested on pregnant and nursing women.

With any medication, there is always a possibility of these medications interacting with the other prescriptions that are currently being taken for other conditions. Just make sure that your pharmacist and doctor are updated on the medication you are taking.

In this talk I would like to touch on children and how they are affected by what we bring into our homes. Like it or not the second highest source of chemical contamination, after food, is air. Chemicals build up from cleaning compounds, personal care products, cosmetics and toiletries. Another reality many parents may or may not know is that children are at a higher risk of developing side effects and illnesses from these exposures as their entire physiology, pharmaco-kinetics and dynamics differ from those of adults.

There are also some behavioral aspects of pregnancy that may increase the likelihood of exposure as many women & men prepare for their new born by engaging in repairs to the home environment. Remodeling may increase exposure to hazards such as lead-based paint, asbestos, formaldehyde, and radon. Of these, lead is a major reproductive toxin that can cause decreased fertility in men and women and increase the risk of intrauterine toxicity to the fetus (Silbergeld EK. et al.1997)

In addition, PTSD is more likely to develop in repeated heavy combat exposure, and with the number of times soldiers have been sent home and called back we would be fooling ourselves if we expected them to survive without some stress damage.

Add to this a factor that munitions technology is constantly pushing forward, and Governments don’t always have time to analyze the affects on soldier’s health when they are exposed to chemicals and residue on the battle field. We may have just handed out health care system a bigger burden that it can handle, by the time the wars are over.

Microbubbles. Take any oily solution, froth it into a frappe with a high concentration of tiny bubbles, and inject those into your bloodstream. Now you hit them with ultrasound and a nearly perfect image of your internal organs will bounce back. Cleared by the FDA in the late 1990’s for use in imaging applications, microbubbles are starting to be an attractive alternative to traditional methods of internal imaging, being both cheaper and faster than an MRI.

But wait, there’s more. Researchers have discovered another use for microbubbles, as tiny little carriers for targeted doses of medicine. For instance, drugs can be delivered directly to a tumor using microbubbles; once at the target location, the microbubbles can be induced to pop, releasing their medicine payload and reducing the need to bombard the entire body with radioactive material, for instance. Sometimes it’s the simple things that change our methods the most!

Medical marijuana. Separating ourselves from the image of hippies toking a bong-load, the active ingredient in marijuana is cannabinoids, which is a unique group of secondary metabolites found in the cannabis plant - which just happens to be where the plant’s peculiar pharmacological effects come from. Cannabinoids have been explored here and there over the years, but recent research has produced a staggering array of applications.

Cannabinoids have potential to treat Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, diabetes mellitus, dystonia, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, gliomas, hepatitis C, hypertension, incontinence, osteoporosis, pruritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnea, and Tourette’s syndrome. More than the past meek suggestion by the scientific community that cannabis has some uses, it is rapidly becoming apparent that we may have been turning our backs on a miracle drug the entire time.

The autism epidemic. One of the most mysterious neurological disorders of recent times may have finally gotten a break. Research into the causes of autism has revealed some intriguing clues - if anything, autism may yet be a path to increasing our understanding of how the brain works. We already know that children with autism have characteristic abnormalities in the cerebellum, the brain structure responsible for coordinating complex voluntary muscle movements.

New research points to a possible culprit: a newly discovered class of nerve cells in the brain called mirror neurons. These neurons appear to be involved in mental functions such as empathy and the perception of another individual’s intentions. It has been suggested that a dysfunction of the mirror neuron system could result in some of the symptoms of autism.

Autism has seen a sharp rise in the past two decades, but there exists the possibility that previous cases were simply undiagnosed. Moreover, there may be present misdiagnoses of autism where in fact there are other related disorders that only share some of the symptoms. Progress in this field is slow and tedious, but small amounts of progress are now at least providing some hope that we will eventually be better equipped to treat this disorder. Dare we even hope for an eventual cure?

How To Navigate Through The US Social Security Disability System

When faced with the decision of applying for Social Security Disability, several factors should be kept in mind. Aside from the fact that the specific reasons you are applying for Disability makes your situation unique, there are a number of commonalities that need to be considered for all cases. I’m also assuming that your case is legitimate and not a claim based on maligning or simply an attempt not to work. The idea is to make your case as strong as possible and avoid the traps that the Social Security System specifically sets to deny your request for benefits.

Social Security, from the perspective of the administrators of this social service, doesn’t want to make it easy for you to get disability. Their reasoning goes that unless you are not capable of ANY type of work, they will not approve your application. The statistics show that most people who apply are turned down the first time they apply for benefits, regardless of their legitimate need. So it is up to you to appeal and continue to appeal regardless of how many times you are refused.

The process begins with an appointment at your local Social Security Office, after you have made your first telephone call to the general SS office (1-800-772-1213). They will send you forms (by mail) to be completed by your personal physician, with any documentation that supports your claim for total disability (regardless of your profession), with an appointment date and location.

When you go, don’t dress up. In fact, dress down. Take all your prescription medications (which you will be asked to document), put them all in a shopping bag and bring them with you, as opposed to a list of medications. It’s far better to take the bottles because it makes your claim that much more tangible.

If you are going alone, go by cab and get a receipt. If you live in a city, you will be asked how you came to the office. They reason that if you can negotiate the public transportation system, then you can work. Show them the receipt. This is especially true if you live in a large city like NYC which has a fairly accessible public transportation system.

They will do all the lab-work at this appointment, take blood, urine, x-rays or other procedures they feel are warranted. You will also see one of their physicians who will examine you and verify your claim. If you have any hospital x-rays or documents from previous hospitalizations, bring them to show the doctor. This appointment is the place to bring all “the stuff” you have to support your claim. It is your responsibility to make sure you present as strong a case as possible.

You will also see a psychiatrist who will question you on the impact this disability has had on your life and your ability to work at ANY job. You will be asked questions like, how much weight you can lift, can you do your own housework, can you take care of yourself, such as dressing, washing yourself. All sorts of things to see if you have any capability whatsoever to do ANY sort of work, or do anything independently. So, how you answer these questions will determine whether your request is approved or denied.

Another important question they will ask you is if you can type, do you have a computer. The idea here is that if you are capable of typing or using a computer then you can do some type of work. You need to anticipate the motives of each question you are being asked and be very careful to not do anything to jeopardize your claim. If you’re not sure what they are asking, you can always (depending on your claim), say you don’t understand, you don’t remember what they asked, or you didn’t hear them.

When you apply for Social Security Disability, it’s presumably because your claim is real, and you need it because your disability has affected your way of life, the quality of your life and you are not able to work. These pointers are to make your case as strong as possible. It’s not to lie or to make a claim that is not legitimate, but remember that Social Security measures your disability by your ability to do any work at all. They will use this criterion to question you and will not hesitate to use your answers to refuse your case no matter how real and legitimate your disability is. About ten days to two weeks after filing your claim, you will receive a response. It will be either an approval or a denial. If it’s denied, appeal, appeal, and appeal. Most times when you appeal, it will be approved, but they won’t make it easy. If you’re in real need of benefits, don’t give up and don’t get discouraged by the first denial.
